What happens when 100,000 watts of sound vibrate throughout Heavy’s full-scale fabrication shop?

Nuts, bolts and screws go flying everywhere – that’s exactly what happened during stability testing of the stage that Heavy Industries built for Excision’s Execution tour, 2013. The stage withstood the sound vibrations, but the shop … well that’s another story.

All we can think about now is what will be happening to the eardrums of all those music lovers as they experience one of the hottest dubstep shows touring.

When Beama Visual Environments approached Heavy to work on the stage for the Excision tour, we knew the project would be serious. I mean, the stage is called The Executioner. And did you know Excision means: “removal by cutting”. Holey jeez!

We were, of course, stoked for the opportunity to work on another video projection mapping project that would become a technological feat thanks to Beama.

Beama Visual Environments is a full service production company specializing in 3D projection mapping, stage design, and content creation, so we knew this project was going to be innovative and really cool. Among other things, Beama did all the video production work for the tour.

In case you don’t know,

“Video Projection Mapping is an exciting new projection technique that can turn almost any surface into a dynamic video display. Specialized software is used to warp and mask the projected image to make it fit perfectly on irregularly shaped screens. When done right, the end result is a dynamic projection installation that transcends ordinary video projection”

explains Video Mapping Blog.

So with Beama overseeing the production, and PK Sound providing the sound system, we went to work building the stage, ahem… I mean The Executioner.

The stage itself stands approximately 28’ wide by 15’ tall by 8’ deep. To build it, Beama provided us with a 3D surface model of what they wanted the stage to look like and told us to get busy.

Heavy’s design team used our extensive 3D modeling capabilities, employed through SolidWorks software, to design the complex framework required to build the stage with accurate angles, perfectly to scale.

The framework is made of aluminum and designed for the stage to break down into 12 modular sections for ease of shipping from venue to venue. The sections of the frame lock quickly together with roto-locks to ensure speedy setup at each of the tour locations.

The stage includes sliding panels and hinged doors with pneumatic controls integrated directly by the Excision team for added visual effects. The projection surface of the stage is made of Sintra® rigid PVC plastic board; a suitable high-quality projection surface and ideal for fabricating the angular surfaces of the stage.
